Contributory service – there’s no limit

Member questions directed to HOOPP in the last few months seem to indicate that there’s a bit of confusion about contributory service.

Some members, who have 30 or 35 years of contributory service, think that they have maxed out their pension and have to stop contributing, when this isn’t the case at all.

If you get questions from members, please advise them that there are absolutely no limits to contributory service.

When a member has 30 years of eligibility service, this simply means that the member can receive an unreduced pension. Just remember: the member must begin collecting their pension by November of the year in which they reach age 71.

In 2002, the 35-year cap on contributory service was removed and we notified HOOPP members of this change towards the end of 2001.

For more information, please direct members to the early retirement page.
