If You Expect To Be Off Work 15 Weeks Or More
Definition of partial disability
Being partially disabled means you have a medically certifiable physical or mental impairment that HOOPP has determined currently prevents you from doing your own job.
Free accrual for up to four years
If HOOPP determines that you are partially disabled (unable to perform your job), you will be credited with free accrual until the next date at which HOOPP requires medical evidence.
The free accrual cannot begin until after the first 15 weeks of your health leave. If you continue to qualify as partially disabled, you can continue to build benefits for up to four years, minus the first 15 weeks.
After you submit your medical evidence, HOOPP will contact you to tell you if you’ve qualified for free accrual and, if so, to inform you of the next date by which you must provide medical evidence if you wish to apply for continued free accrual.
Make sure medical evidence is provided by deadline
It’s up to you to ensure HOOPP receives medical evidence by the requested. If you miss a deadline and subsequently provide qualifying medical evidence, you may have a gap in your contributory service.
If you become unemployed while on a health leave
If you become unemployed while receiving free accrual, you can continue to receive free accrual for up to four years, as long as you remain medically qualified.
If your condition worsens
If your condition worsens and you provide supporting medical evidence to HOOPP and are assessed as either totally disabled or totally and permanently disabled, you may qualify for free accrual for longer than four years or a disability pension.
