Waiving Spousal Benefits

You and your qualifying spouse can elect to waive pre-retirement death benefits. In addition, within the 12 months leading up to retirement, you and your qualifying spouse can elect to waive the right to post retirement benefits.

Waiving spousal benefits does not increase your pension. It simply means your normal form of pension becomes that of a person without a qualifying spouse.

To better understand the impact of doing this, you and your spouse should seek independent legal and financial advice.

Once pension payments begin, a waiver cannot be reversed.

Please contact HOOPP if you are considering waiving spousal benefits.
