Optional pension for post-retirement spouse now available
Effective Jan. 1, 2006, you can apply to provide a spousal pension to a spouse acquired after retirement. The “cost” of the pension will be an actuarial equivalent reduction to your lifetime pension, based on your age and the age of your spouse.
Some conditions apply. If you had a spouse at retirement, and that person did not waive spousal benefits, you may not be able to take advantage of this option. If you have divorced, remarried, and if the spouse you had at retirement is still living, this option is not open to you. Also, HOOPP may request a health certificate.
Should you be eligible, it is important to remember that this is an entirely optional Plan feature. You are under no obligation to elect it if you acquire a spouse after retirement.
If you are interested in this option, please complete the Post-retirement Spousal Benefit Application.
