Leaves
By making contributions for leaves, you increase your contributory service, and help build a bigger pension.
Different rules apply depending on the type and duration of your leave.
If you decide to make contributions for a leave, you can either make periodic contributions while you are away, or make all the contributions as a lump sum (with the exception of strike or lockouts, contributions can only made afterwards). Contributions must be received by HOOPP no later than six months from the end of a leave.
All contributions you make will be matched by your employer at the prevailing rate.
There are limits under the Income Tax Act on the amount of service you can build for leaves. Please consult our Pension leaves limits page for details.
Special leaves
As outlined in the Employment Standards Act, members can choose whether or not to make contributions for a:
- pregnancy leave
- parental leave
- family medical leave
- emergency leave
Members can also choose to make contributions for strike or lockout periods.
If a member decides to contribute for these, the employer must contribute as well.
Leaves 31 days or more
For employer-approved leaves, other than the above, that are 31 days or more, members can choose to contribute as long as the employer approves the request to contribute.
Rules are different for leaves that are 30 days or less in duration.
Health-related leaves
The rules for leaves related to illness are different. Follow the links below to find out more about the types of health-related leaves.
