Survivor Benefits
All HOOPP pensions include potential benefits for the member’s survivors. Those entitlements are determined by three things:
- if the member has a qualifying spouse
- if the member dies before or after retirement
- if the member is vested
If a member dies prior to vesting, his or her primary beneficiary receives the member’s contributions to HOOPP with interest.
Death of a vested member before retirement
Death after retirement
Shortened life expectancy
Members may be able to receive their pension as a lump sum if they provide HOOPP with medical evidence that they face a shortened life expectancy.
Waiving spousal benefits pre and post retirement
If a member and his or her spouse elect to waive spousal benefits, the member’s normal form of pension becomes that of a member without a qualifying spouse.
